Below is information about my great-grandfather, George Washington Scearce

George W. Scearce

George Washington Scearce was born in 1843 in Shelby County, Kentucky. As a youngster, he moved north to Danville, Indiana with his father, Ezra Scearce who established a farm and homestead there. George W. joined the 51st Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. He served in Company K which was commanded by his older brother, William Waller Scearce. His Record of Service is below. Also there is an article written about him in the local paper. George fought in and survived many battles. He was captured by Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest's troops at Rome Georgia and was imprisoned on Belle Island in the James River at Richmond, Va. His brother, William was imprisoned in Libby Prison at Richmond and later escaped with the Regimental Commander, Col Streight, to rejoin Union Forces. George was paroled (parole certificate below), but went on to fight again. He was wounded by a mini-ball to the hip in the Battle of Nashville on December 16, 1864. He fell from his horse and broke the scabbard of his sword. I retain his sword and broken scabbard. He entered the War as a Private and was eventually promoted to Captain. He returned to Danville, Indiana where he married Sophia Chamberlain after the War in 1865 and had five children. One of those children was Harry who was my grandfather. My father, George Comer Scearce was named after George W and his Mother's maiden name, Comer. I was in turn named George, with the middle name Edward for my Maternal Grandfather, F. Edward Matthews. I named my son Mark after Mark J. Scearce of Shelbyville, KY, a cofounder of the Wakefield-Scearce Galleries in Shelbyville. Also below is a picture of the Danville, Indiana house at the turn of the Century. It was built by Ezra Scearce in 1852. There is an article about a purchaser in recent times. Note the front porch was removed. One pix below is of Donald and Marty Scearce holding George W. Scearce's sword and "Record of Service" I was fortunate in being able to meet with them when they visited Williamsburg, Va on an "Elderhostel" visit in 1999. Donald is my cousin. Our Great-Grandfather was George W. Scearce. His Grandfather was Edwin Scearce, the second son of George W.. My Grandfather was Harry Scearce, the eldest son of George W
